Last year we learned how to listen for our body’s YES and NO. This will be a review of those methods, but I will also be offering one more tool at the end, which everyone found to be quite fun to use!
By memory:
Think back to a time when your every fiber of your being, every cell in your body screamed YES, this is right for me. Sit with that energy. Notice what your body feels like. Notice what areas of your body feel most alive to you. What emotions are surfacing? What sensations come up?
Write down or draw out anything you want to remember. Shake it off.
Now think back to a time when every fiber of your being, every cell in your body screamed NO, this isn’t right for me. Sit with that energy. Notice how different this feels from your YES. Notice what your body feels like. Notice what areas of your body feel most alive to you. What emotions are surfacing? What sensations come up?
Write down or draw out anything you want to remember. Shake it off.
It may be fairly easy to drum up the energy of a strong YES or NO, but what about the body’s more subtle signaling? This is especially important when the body is trying to communicate a NO, but your mind or your heart really wants to hear a YES.
Bring yourself back to a time when your body gave you a subtle NO. Lean into that energy. Compare that to your body’s more obvious NO. Notice what your body feels like. Notice what areas of your body feel most alive to you. What emotions are surfacing? What sensations come up?
Working with that same memory, feel into the contradictory energy (of your mind and/or your heart). What comes into your awareness? Feel how you can hold those conflicting flows and distinguish the differences between them.
Write down or draw out anything you want to remember. Shake it off.
In meditation:
This is a great way to exercise beginner’s mind, because instead of working with a past memory, you are allowing your body to show you how it communicates a YES or a NO in the present moment. If you have already done the exercises above, compare the feelings of YES and NO that you access through your memory with what you get in the present moment.
Turn inward. Ask your body to show you a YES. Sit in that energy and note what you become aware of. Ask your body to show you a NO. Note what changes and familiarize yourself with that energy.
When you feel complete, bring yourself back to the room. Write down or draw what you wish to remember. Shake it off.
Using your body as a pendulum:
This is a great introductory practice to muscle testing (a.k.a applied kinesiology). It’s really fun to do and you can do it just as easily in public as in the privacy of your own home!
Stand up straight and set the intention to connect with your higher self. Ask your higher self to show you a YES. Notice what happens. Bring yourself back to center. Ask your higher self to show you a NO. Notice what happens and how it is different from your YES. Ask your higher self to show you a MAYBE. Again, notice any changes.
Tips:
- Using your body as a pendulum can be really useful for any scenarios where you need yes/no answers. You can use this for really big life questions or use it when you go grocery shopping to find out what will support your nutrition.
- As with any kind of energy work, TRUST and PRACTICE are paramount. With practice, you will learn to discern when you are moving your body with intention (because you really want a certain answer) and when your body is showing you your truth. You will learn to trust your body over time!
- If you seem not to be getting any answers or if the answer isn’t clear, ease off a little. The more pressure you put on your body to give you an answer in the form you are looking for, the more difficult it will be to sense what is being communicated. Don’t hesitate to ask for your body to communicate more clearly / strongly (though be careful what you ask for!) / in a way you understand.
In the spirit of beginner’s mind, I don’t want to set any expectations by typing out the general experiences that people have had as their YES and their NO. But please do share in the comments below how your body communicates YES and NO. What was the most effective way of determining this for yourself? Have you tried out the pendulum tool? How did it work out for you?
